Shed Construction: Materials Make All the Difference

As sheds continue to be used for much more than storage, durability remains one of the most important considerations for shed builders. No matter the use, a shed must stand up to the passage of time, the weather and more. That’s why the materials needed to build a shed, including shed flooring, must come together to provide protection against these threats.

LP Outdoor Building Solutions offers the unique opportunity to build a shed with materials that come from one supplier. From LP® ProStruct® products to those in the LP Structural Solutions portfolio, these premium products have been shown to help builders create sheds that last.

Jeff Yelle, Director, OSB/EWP Technology at LP Building Solutions, adds that “using premium materials to build sheds helps builders highlight that they are not just putting out a shed product that meets expectations but instead exceeds those expectations."

Materials Needed to Build a Durable Shed

When it comes to the materials needed to build a shed, premium resources often provide the true durability a shed requires to stand up to the elements and fulfill its purpose. Completing shed construction with premium materials can also mean less risk for repairs in the future.

Yelle urges shed builders to remember that using commodity products can, at times, come with a price. “By stepping up into a premium category of solutions, you can be confident that you are building in a high level of performance,” he says. “While other commodity materials may meet the minimum requirements, using premium products provides you with a little more insurance against the unexpected, including moisture and extreme temperatures.”

Additionally, when high-performance materials come from one supplier, you can also know they’re designed to complement each other. “This simplifies the material purchasing process, the installation process and, if necessary, the product support process,” Yelle mentions.

LP® TechShield® Radiant Barrier

Installing a radiant barrier for a shed is one step builders can take toward building more premium sheds. Yelle explains the benefits of using LP TechShield Radiant Barrier for a shed’s roof: “When using LP TechShield panels as your roof sheathing, you’re able to reduce the amount of heat transfer from the roof assembly into the storage space. This can mean cooler temperatures for all of the items you have stored.” LP TechShield panels also install just like regular sheathing, so adding on a premium product to your build doesn’t add on labor to the process.

“Elevated temperatures can accelerate the deterioration of many materials,” Yelle adds, “so any steps you can take to reduce the overall temperature inside a shed will help limit this impact.”

Beyond storage, if you are building an alternative use shed, a radiant barrier can help make the space more comfortable and livable no matter the temperature outside. This is key for clients who intend to spend time in their sheds by using them as offices, workrooms and more.

LP Legacy® Premium Sub-Flooring

LP Legacy sub-flooring is an excellent choice when it comes to building a sub-floor for a shed,” Yelle says. “Outdoor structures can be used for so many different purposes and installing one of the stiffest sub-floors available can give you confidence that whatever you decide to store in your shed is sitting on a solid foundation.”

As shed flooring, LP Legacy panels are unmatched in durability. Manufactured with Gorilla Glue Technology® for stiffness and moisture resistance, LP Legacy sub-flooring installs easily and resists edge swell while boasting exceptional fastener holding. Using engineered wood for a shed floor, like that of LP Legacy panels, can boost the quality of every shed you build. And with this product, building a shed floor can be simple with materials built for consistency.
